having been on something of a hiatus following the birth of his kids, milton jackson is back and in best form ever on songs without words. his most recent releases have been on uk label tsuba and is responsible for remixes for recloose on planet e, al kent, and m a n i k. kito jempere debuted on freerange in 2013 but quickly got soon after got snapped up for ep s on dirt crew, let s play house and most recently room with a view. he also owns and manegs the fata morgana label from his base in saint petersburg. pittsburgh track authority are the genre bending trio releasing some of the finest house and techno from the east coast of the us on their own label in the machine age as well as esteemed imprints such as azuri, argot and finale sessions. kuniyuki is something of a japanese enigma, staying resolutely below the radar despite being heralded by many (including derrick may) as a major inspiration. the multi-instrumentalist has collaborated with henrik schwarz, vakula, dj nature and jimpster and has released on mule and sound of speed and remixed dj sprinkles, joe clausell and ananda project.

pittsburgh track authority have been making waves the last couple of years following brilliant releases on some of the best underground house labels around such as uzuri, argot, finale sessions as well as their own pittsburgh tracks imprint. last year saw their debut lp enter the machine age gain them further fans and we invited them to remix nils penners i can be for which they delivered an absolute beast. the pittsburgh based collective are as comfortable making disco-influenced grooves as they are funk infused techno so when they offered us your situation with a view to doing an ep we jumped at the chance.

pittsburgh track authority return with a new single-sided limited edition edits record on the imprint that bears only their own logo. “i always wanted to be in a band” kicks things off in an early 70s soul jazz style, with infectious vocals and catchy horns doing the damage. next, a flute driven cover of the dance classic “lowdown” keeps the disco-funk vibes of the original but with added springtime/summer vibes. both of these have done damage for pta at their gigs, and now they can do damage for you at yours. a fitting end to the magenta logo series!

the album is titled timespan and is by the veteran pittsburgh artist shawn rudiman and will be released on november 24th worldwide on 2xlp and digital. the album is a carefully curated journey through almost 20 years of shawn s music productions. the tracks collected here--the majority of which have not been heard outside of shawn s studio--showcase a producer with seldom matched knowledge of studio techniques, while also hinting at his world renowned live performances. having access to a vault of hundreds of unreleased compositions, we believe this is an important step in documenting shawn s contribution to pittsburgh and american dance music. * artist statement: -all of these tracks are simply snapshots of my life moments. they go from base-level warehouse to more cerebral sophistication. so, take them as such. timespan sums it up well. some songs are almost 2 decades old, some are fresh. it s a paragraph written with words that have years between them. somehow they still all sort of make sense together.- - shawn rudiman

again shooting for the altitudes reached on manhigh’s first journey, henning baer’s second operation returns to the endeavour with a newly diversified mission. ‘operator’ finds us already at the furthest edge of the atmosphere, pulsating waves of distorted electronics and distant, disembodied voices floating in the void. ‘pittsburgh left’ is the fall back to earth, the unrelenting metallic rhythm slowly gaining momentum, momentary shifts in perspective and detail flashing by as the decent accelerates inexorably. the contemplation before leaving the ground, ‘aiim’ slowly anticipates the ascent and examines the cosmos before lift-off. surely the launch phase ‘canadian suit’ is both reflective and onrushing, trapped between tense, contrasting moments before being flung into the unknown. displaying both henning baer’s typically acute feeling for talent and kangding ray’s restless ear, the remix of ‘aiim’ is a complete reinterpretation, setting grinding triplet rhythms in an industrial soundscape that suggests travels more fearful than those that surround it.

marcel vogel s lumberjacks in hell label shows no signs of slowing as it ramps up a killer new salvo from debutant artist c scott. -climb on- is an uptempo workout to capture the absolute peak of the party in the funkiest of ways, while -hands free- provides an apt alternative with its slow, organ-led whimsy. disco remains the backbone of the sound here, whatever tempo the track rolls at and wherever it may head. -stuttering- demonstrates this perfectly with its heavily treated, head-spinning fx still capturing that classic good-time mood, while -at ease- finishes on a life-affirming canter of rhodes led celebration.

impressed by the wealth of wonderfully varied analogue electronic music being released by this small, fiercely independent french label, it was surely a matter of time before py & errs’ likeminded paths crossed- and following a “cold wave” styled small run cassette release, gilles releases a full length on py for august.
“phase” is a timeless, minimal electronic record, heavy on hypnotic, emotional tonal arpeggios and sequences. dreamily crafted introspective pieces, and short “broadcastian” interludes, using a semi-modular system. comprising of various analogue oscillators, effects and sequencers (pittsburgh modular, moog, arturia, yamaha, korg to name a few…).

one of sonic groove s longest standing label artists, realmz returns with an infectious well rounded four cut extended ep entitled “mindfold”. straight out of pittsburgh the steel city capital of the usa realmz has been involved in electronic music since the last decade of the 20th century. growing up on a steadfast diet of industrial/ebm/idm/detroit techno and drum & bass, realmz has taken inspiration from these many underground forms of electronic music. in his signature style, the sci-fi sound design on “mindfold” weaves it s way in an out of bleak futuristic overtones set across a multitude of uniquely written broken beat and 4/4 drum rhythms. this heavily thought provocative & extremely well produced, contemporary industrial techno ep is a must for any aficionado of the genre.

deeply concerned with the here and now versus sister label was/is electro archaeology, is/was delivers the goods once again with this various artists 12- zeroed in on the pittsburgh scene. you can feel the steel city tension reverberating in naeem s edgy beatdown -forward facing-, while hits only takes things in a slightly cleaner, modernist direction that aligns with some of the uk soundsystem interpretations of electro that have emerged in recent years. shawn rudiman takes control for the b side with two jams that tip their cap to the veteran producer s long and accomplished career, but they sound as fresh as anything else on the record too. -derelict- is a gnarly, bloated banger of a track, and -asimolar- takes the route towards cybotron, kraftwerk and the truly foundational version of electro in all its lysergic glory.

after a strong start with an ep from dwayne jensen, pittsburgh-based label is / was returns with an absolute firecracker from chase smith. nous nous au danser is the kind of jam that will guarantee everyone in the room starts freaking, so infectious is the bright and bold acid strain smith offers up. orange geena is equally stunning, all warm bass and dazzling synths. work it over takes things in a punchier direction, leaving a little more space in the mix for the rhythm section to help things get really nasty. tour de trepan takes on some new beat qualities as it unfurls a noirish beat-driven fantasy to finish off an utterly flawless ep.

pittsburghs most loved sons, the modey lemon, rip through 3 years of silence with their new record, season of sweets. with one foot in the sci fi darkness of their last record curious city, one foot in their past garage angst ridden wreckage and one foot in the kautrock brilliance of the german frontier (what, three feet?) season of sweets is a fuzzed out, driving masterpiece with catchy hooks beaten to death by guitar / synth mayhem and the anchor of paul quattrones drums of passion. as primitive as it is futuristic, modey lemon is recreating the present, molecule by molecule, every second of every breath. the trio from pittsburgh returns with another helping of sugary sweetness that rots your teeth and leaves you wanting more. recorded during the dead of winter in pittsburgh, pa at the brass factory. mixed and recorded by jason kirker, member and principal noisemaker. the last 2 years have been very, very interesting for the band. after signing with mute recording in the uk and playing the granddaddy of all venues, the fillmore opening for dinosaur jr., the band took some time away to regroup and work on new material. the result is season of sweets. driven by drummer extraordinaire paul quattrone, the songs twist and turn through the imagery and dark rock that has made modey lemon famous. jason kirker (engineer and band member) uses various keyboards, moogs and instruments to make the sound more full. at the heart of this album is the energy and mysticism singer phil boyd leads you on. track number 5, become a monk is the more pop oriented and accessible track, with a great back beat and bass.

alleviated veteran ben jenkins launches his new vinyl label partial magic with pittsburgh s chase smith. chase turns in four cuts of percolating-hissing drum machines and squirting- gibbering oscillators. the whole quivering ensemble chugs with an electro snap and a steady dance mania clip until the cool- down of silky and sensuous pads on the closing track.

different shapes & sizes is a new, 3 part series of eps from berlin resident spencer parker forthcoming on his work them records imprint over the next few months. conceived as a neat way of showcasing parkers love for different shades of house and techno, different shapes & sizes takes a walk through the rekids artists love for the subtle differences in the genres he tends to focus on most in his sets. london-born parker has been in fine fettle this past few years with his its not over project riding high while work them records has been lauded for tracks and remixes from the likes of radio slave, rodhad, pittsburgh track authority, young male and dan beaumont. different shapes & sizes: part 1 a double a-side exercise in muscular, simplistic house workouts, drops on vinyl and digitally in february with parts 2 and 3 following in march and april respectively.

a negative hallucination is an idea that was first put forward by sigmund freud in 1890. he used the term to describe how a hypnotised person could be led to be unable to see a person or thing that was right in front of them once out of the hypnotised state, creating a gap in their reality. sadly, this gap in reality seems endemic in the minds of many in the world, whether from lack of access to facts or from wilful ignorance. the result is the same regardless: a world where many oppressed peoples reality is edited out of the conversation. noleian reusse (half of africans with mainframes) and thomas cox (one third of pittsburgh track authority) got together in the studio in pittsburgh during a week of extreme social unrest in the usa in late 2015, resulting in these recordings. the tracks are crafted with a stripped back electronic funk and a stark, relentless feel that reflects the energy in the air at the time. as long time fans of politically and socially charged music like public enemy, underground resistance, nwa, dopplereffekt, and gil scott-heron, noleian and thomas have taken these influences and mixed them with their own styles to come up with a modern dancefloor version of those ideals. lead track solidarity fills the whole a side with its optimism. soulful melodies and strings conquer the driving rhythms, bringing a sense that through sticking together, a better future is possible. the b side s perspective is darker. police state is a crazy raved out banger that combines gritty acid and harsh tones that channel the day-to-day existence for far too many urban people. the third and final cut, surveillance, is a paranoid, spacey techno track that would be ideal as a soundtrack for closed-circuit television video reels. this snapshot of urban life is tied together through artwork by andrew burger, whose mix of throwback style and current ideas nails the dystopian existence that is now reality as predicted so long ago by orwell, huxley, lucas, and many more.
